The Princes´ age in Matelica

In the picturesque rooms of the Ottoni Palace are exposed the archaeological finds belonging to the Iron Age and to the "Orientalizing period" (an historical phase characterized by the spread of artefacts and lifestyles coming from the Near East), which were discovered during the recent excavations carried out in Matelica´s territory and which allowed experts to reconstruct the phases which distinguished this area from the 9th century to the 7th century B.C. The purpose of the exhibition is to show the results of the studies on Matelica’s necropolises, and in particular on the extraordinary and precious funeral collections belonging to aristocratic families: the Tomb n. 182 at Crocefisso and the Tomb n. 1 at Passo Gabella. The exhibition area is provided with panels, illustrative drawings and plastic models which guide visitors through the evidences of this ancient civilization, inspiring into them the charm of the archaeological discoveries. The exhibition also aims at being a unique opportunity to live a cultural and formative experience, as well as being a starting point of a course directed towards connecting the different urban archaeological sites to the Civic Archaeological Museum.
